just a thought…
kathleen hanna has the best bangs. and ponytails. i think she may be my longest standing style icon. which i kind of don’t like admitting, considering how much i resent how the media/k.h. fans have systematically objectified her. being a “beautiful” girl in an underground scene often seems to be valued by the media over the actual contributions of these girls to their respective movements/scenes. it’s a dangerous thing when writing “slut” on your body is reduced by reporters as some pointless act of explicitness and not appreciated as a political commentary on the same media sources’ objectification of women and girls, making the act of labeling bodies literal.
riot grrrl body politics hold a special place in my heart. i obviously love her for more than just her hair. i am already thinking about my next visit to the haircutters’, which is why this came up. i want those piece-y, flippable, adorable bangs, man! i also want to do the high ponytail more often than just when i go to the gym, haha. i got the red lipstick covered already.
oh kathleen, you were always one of my favorite heroes in adolescence. now i just want to sit and listen to you talk about your politics and ask you questions about feminism and being a female musician and bands you like and books you’d recommend.
